April Is the Month to Keep America Beautiful
Some holidays throughout the year seem meaningless. And April includes several of these lesser-known holidays that you probably didn’t even realize existed. For example, did you know there was such a thing as International Twit Award Month? Or even a Straw Hat Month? Those are just two of the holidays for which April is (kind of) known. But it’s also called the Keep America Beautiful Month. If you don’t know what that’s about, here are some things that the Keep America Beautiful organization does throughout the year (and especially in April) to keep our nation looking its best.
Litter Prevention
The KAB organization strives to educate people about the dangers that litter can pose. You might not think that throwing your straw wrapper out your window has an effect on the environment. But if everybody in the United States felt that way, there would be 300 million straw wrappers covering the streets. KAB’s goal is to make a difference and keep the country looking great by educating the public, using technology to clean up the waste, guiding laws that impact people’s littering behaviors, and enforcing those laws with consistent action.
Waste Reduction
Did you know Americans generate more than 250 million tons of garbage every year? That’s nearly one ton of trash for each person living in the country! And this waste has detrimental effects on the environment and, as a result, our health. The Keep America Beautiful organization wants to lessen the amount of waste we use as a nation. KAB wants all Americans to think about the choices we make at the grocery store as well as the choices we make relating to disposing of trash. Buying recycled products is a great way to reduce waste, but there simply isn’t enough consumer demand for it right now because of a lack of awareness. By placing recycling containers around our neighborhoods and using other convenient methods, we can all contribute to a healthier environment burdened with less trash at the landfills.
Beautification
It’s not enough simply to reduce trash and pick up litter. Keep America Beautiful also wants to plant trees, flowers, and plants to keep the nation’s landscape as pretty as it can be. KAB builds gardens, parks, and greenscapes in areas of the community. It also helps to remove graffiti while trying to prevent future occurrences of graffiti at the same time.

You can dive in and be one of the many volunteers that go out into the community to pick up trash.
